About
Bio:
A New Mexico Native, now living in Utah, Jennifer Werkmeister draws on her experience and memories in the Southwest to create landscapes full of color and memory. Jennifer invites viewers to look past the camera lens and join her in her experience of these landscapes through loose watercolor and mixed-media renderings. When she isn’t painting in her Salt Lake City studio, she is immersing herself in the the landscapes she loves, through hiking and mountain biking.
Artist’s Statement:
My work is rooted in the arid desert and mountain landscapes of the Southwest. I explore the feeling I get from these landscapes and the memory they leave with me, long after I have departed. I often start a painting or a sketch in the location I plan to focus on, using the impressions and sensations I capture on site to inform my studio work. I favor water media for its organic unpredictability and have taken to making my own paints from earth pigments I find throughout the Southwest. The process of finding these pigments helps me to see the color in the sunbaked landscape all around me, and incorporating them into my work further anchors it with a sense of place.
